The Food Depot is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization looking for a committed, community-minded person who values our vision of a hunger-free New Mexico. This is a federally-funded position for two-year period. This project will allow New Mexico farmers, growers and food producers to expand their market reach and supports food banks to get a reliable quantity of local fresh food for clients in need. The purpose of the project is to purchase fresh, New Mexico-grown produce, dairy, and protein and distribute it through New Mexico’s hunger-relief network to people struggling with hunger. Our focus is to purchase from disadvantaged producers, providing a more reliable market, and adding more variety for food bank clients.


The Local Food Transportation Specialist will work closely with the Local Food Procurement Specialist and New Mexico Department of Agriculture Project Manager to coordinate deliveries to New Mexico food banks, identify potential participants in the hunger-relief network to offer locally produced food for distribution, and set up direct delivery of purchased New Mexico produced product through the Farm to Food Pantry Program to agency partners in the hunger-relief network




  • Manages all aspects of local product delivery to food banks and their partner agencies in New Mexico’s hunger-relief network
  • Identifies participants to receive locally-produced foods, and develops those relationships; determines needs of participants and needed training and equipment to increase their capacity for handling the highly perishable foods available through the Farm to Food Pantry program
  • Ensures introductions and development of relationships between local producers and partners accessing the locally produced products
  • Participates on and maintains communications with members of task force to allow for continuous project evaluation and to ensure success of project; develops all required and requested reports on progress
  • Develops logistics plans and procedures to ensure that client needs are met; develops policies and procedures to support functional infrastructure
  • Works closely with the receiving coordinators at New Mexico food banks to arrange delivery of locally produced product
  • To ensure product safety and integrity, works closely with New Mexico food banks’ receiving coordinators to develop, implement, and review all inventory counting systems, stock rotation process and supporting policies and procedures; ensures that all stock and inventory items are maintained in accordance with all applicable policies, procedures, standards, and program guidelines
  • Communicates with receiving and inventory coordinators at food banks on all aspects of product receiving, storage, and staging for distribution
  • Achieves positive customer relationships with local product donors, food banks and their partner agencies
  • Assures that food is handled in accordance with safe food handling practices
  • Contributes to building a positive team spirit; puts success of team above own interests
  • Understands and complies with all Food Depot policies, procedures, and systems
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned



  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to gather complex data, and knowledge of food procurement
  • Working knowledge of transportation logistics, New Mexico food systems, food banking or supply chain and distribution a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree and some business or non-profit experience required

Employment Requirements

Physical Environment

There is flexibility in position location but must be a New Mexico resident. Some presence at The Food Depot office in Santa Fe may be required, and we expect travel to be necessary.
